The results of RC3’s survey of residents’ views on short term rentals (STR) are in!
RC3 conducted a survey between October 22 and November 8, 2024, to gather residents’ opinions on short-term rentals (STRs). Despite requesting that STR owners not participate, an estimated 100-150 owners did so among the 1,005 responses received.
Key findings:
81% of respondents live near an STR.
65% know people adversely affected by STRs.
On STR quantity:
76% disagree that more STRs are needed to support tourism.
74% are unwilling to have more STRs in their neighborhood.
71% agree on protecting homes for local residents.
Regarding nuisance issues:
94% of those living near STRs have experienced problems with noise, partying, and parking.
Occupancy and enforcement:
81% oppose increasing occupancy limits.
37% are unaware of who to call or are dissatisfied with enforcement responses.
Conclusion: Despite potential biases from STR owners, the results indicate a significant majority of residents oppose more STRs in neighborhoods, supporting existing percentage caps and occupancy limits. Ongoing nuisance issues and mixed reviews on enforcement suggest residents are dissatisfied with the current state of STR regulation.
A summary of the survey results was provided to the Chelan County Planning Commissioners at the public meeting on November 13.
